Coles Supermarkets Australia Pty Ltd (trading in the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and known as Coles) is a part of Coles group that operates a chain of supermarket, retail, and consumer services.
The supermarket chain has its headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, and also offers an eCommerce platform of the same name called Coles Online. Coles is now using the slogan ‘Value the Australian Way.’
History of Coles
George James Coles first learned the retail trade through his father’s ‘Coles Store’ business. In 1914, Coles opened ‘Coles Variety Store’ in Collingwood, Melbourne. The store further grew due to the acquisition of 54 John Connell Dickins grocery stores, including other Australian grocery stores in the 1960s.
Coles was able to establish a minimum of one store in all Australian cities in 1973. However, Coles supermarkets were branded as ‘Coles New World’ having Space Age-themed marketing in 1962, but later rebranded as Coles Supermarkets in 1991, and simply ‘Coles’ in 1998.
Aside from the Coles branding, some of their supermarkets are re-branded as Bi-Lo Supermarkets in 2016. Unfortunately, mostly closed in 2017 and a few are rebranded again as Coles.
Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers agreed to purchase Coles Group Limited in July 2007, which the purchase completed in the following year. Under their ownership, Coles had improved its customer service through store facilities and employee training.
A decade later, Wesfarmers decided to demerge the Coles business in November 2018. Steven Cain was appointed as CEO of the demerger of Coles from Wesfarmers. Coles became a standalone publicly listed company on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).
