Gerry Harvey and Ian Norman first met when they were both working as a door to door salesman for vacuum cleaners. In 1961, they opened their first store that sells electronic goods and appliances. The store’s success led them to expand the business and talk to a retailer named Keith Lord.
They could not agree on what name to use, so they instead used Norman Ross where it retained Norman’s last name and Lord’s first store manager, Peter Ross. The first Harvey Norman store opened in October 1982, when they both purchased a shopping center in outer Sydney. Five years later, it was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1987.
In the 1990s, Harvey Norman has adopted the format of Superstores in the United States which also sold computers and furniture. The first computer superstore of the brand opened in 1993, that later on, many stores expanded their computer selection. It has acquired a lot of businesses through the years and now operates in different countries.
