History of JB Hi-Fi

In 1974, John Barbuto established a single store in Victoria with the store name ‘JB Hi-Fi.’ The JB on the store name came from the founder’s initials. He had one basic philosophy: to have a specialized collection of Hi-Fi and recorded music at the most competitive prices in Australia.

John sold the business to Richard Bouris, David Rodd, and Peter Caserta in 1983, which then expanded to Melbourne and Sydney. Private equity bankers and senior management bought JB Hi-Fi in July 2000, with the aim of expanding the popular concept nationwide.

JB Hi-Fi is the world’s seventh-largest consumer electronics and home appliance retailer as of August 2018. The following year, the company launched a concept store called JB Hi-Fi Express. It focused more on mobile products with less focus on home entertainment electronics and computers.

Richard Murray, CEO for seven years, announced in April 2021 that he will be leaving his role at the end of August of the same year. He will be replaced by Terry Smart, the managing director of another electronics retailer in Australia, The Good Guys. The JB Hi-Fi group also acquired The Good Guys in September 2016.
